NUMBER 34: Andy Warhol Looks a Scream!
With parents from Slovakia, I guess you would never imagine a figure like Andy Warhol to leave such an indelible mark on planet earth? That is where we often go wrong. We assume that success can only breed from particular regions of the world. Of course, being born in the USA, Warhol still fits somewhat into the perception that our celebrities can only come from well known countries however, in the 1930’s and 40’s as a growing boy, Warhol was still entrenched in his families ideals of what direction his life should take.
That’s the charm of Warhol for me. He came from a background that you would not expect. He has vision. He utilized his vision and pushed through with a great deal of gusto. He believed in himself to the nth degree. It’s how we should all live yet we don’t for the best part. Inspiring, confrontational, provocative and well plugged into the realm of sensationalism, Warhol once predicted the future when he declared that everyone has their 15 minutes. Fast forward to today and we see this ethos everywhere. Literally, every single day someone around the world appears in the headlines for a myriad of reasons and is done away with just as quickly by our disposable society.
Warhol took the simple things like cans of soup and gave them a unique cutting edge. Not many people have the ability to do that for prolonged periods of time. His art, films and interviews always left audiences dazed and somewhat confused. Even today his work is still leaving a mark on our lives without us even knowing it. And that, is the beauty of a man like Warhol. It’s why he always fascinated my teenage mind. It’s why his works still fuck with my head even today.
