NUMBER 13: JOHN LENNON

There isn’t much that hasn’t already been said about John Lennon.  Without a shadow of a doubt he has been one of the most important and influential people of the past 100 years.  His life was always one of adventure combined with adversity.  During the 1980’s I was raised on a stable diet of Beatles albums though it was during my shall we say, musical development period that began in my mid teens where I began to realize how important he was as a socialist provocateur and spokesman for the downtrodden people.

Despite the US Government attempting to deport Lennon over a long period, he always stood his ground firmly within his personal beliefs.  It has been said that, had he been given the opportunity to run for President, he may well have given the Presidential race a good shake up in the 1970’s.  Despite countless attempts to silence him, Lennon always managed to find ways of getting his message across.  This brings me to his much maligned solo albums.  It’s almost as if they have been left behind due to the insurmountable success of The Beatles that still lingers to this day.  I would encourage anyone worth half their crust to sit down over a long weekend and play Lennon’s solo work over a couple of times and not come out of without wanting to go and change the world.

That’s what John Lennon did best.  He influenced people to make change and never give up on a cause because other people said it was a waste of time and energy.  There have indeed been many times in my life where I have felt like walking away though, thanks to Lennon’s drive, I have always take a leaf out of his book and not thrown in the towel when it perhaps seemed the most logical option at the time. It’s important to hold strong views and stick by them regardless of how many people try to cut you down.  For me the biggest problem with the world today is the lack of thought people put into what they do and how they express themselves.  I could never imagine just simply going with the flow and following the masses.  I’d much prefer to to stand alone, be admonished yet still come out the other end a better person for the experience.

If someone tells you that your dream is unattainable, tell them to politely fuck off from whence they came and carry on following your dreams.  What other people think is not important.  It what you think that should matter most so like Lennon, never sit back on your morals.  It’s one of the most significant lessons in life you will ever learn.
