What’s in your collection?

An age old question that people often ask me is “what sort of music do you listen to?” and this, my friends is a question I often struggle to answer.

Of course there are my obvious choices to throw up, however, sometimes I like to throw in names that are a little obscure just to see what response it garners.  One such name is Florence Foster Jenkins.

Few people would know anything about her but that is what I like about music if i’m being honest.  There are some artists that always remain a personal favourite of yours.  For whatever reason the rest of the world never seems to catch on.  Sometimes, that is a good thing perhaps?

Florence Foster Jenkins was born exactly 109 years and one week before myself (July 19 1868) and she passed away in mid 1944 from memory.  Her legacy, for the best part was a concert given shortly before her death, to a sold out audience at Carnegie Hall in New York.  Tickets had sold out weeks in advance.

Florence Foster Jenkins passed away one month after her prestigious appearance at Carnegie Hall, aged 76.  Her legacy, if one could call it that was a forerunner perhaps for the impending reality karaoke contests broadcast on television in the late 1990’s, a concept that still haunts us all today through the atrocities committed on shows like “The Voice” and “American Idol”……
