Overcoming running injuries

In recent months I have picked up a slightly annoying injury in both feet called plantar fasciitis which, doesn’t seem to want to go away.  Even after a month off my feet, the injury has refused to disappear.

Despite all this, I have gradually learnt to manage the injury and, in turn, it has made me enjoy running more than I have at any time in recent years.  What good can one take from a painful injury you ask?  Well, for starters, it makes you more resilient as you chase your goals.  Your mind grows a sense of mental resolve that eliminates most of the aches and pains from your train of thought. You also learn to manage your body better and pay more attention to what you are capable of.  In a way, you garner a greater sense of awareness of when to keep going and when to stop.

With the marathon season fast approaching there was never a chance of giving up on being ready by the first week of July.  Many runners often take the soft option and give up when they pick up niggles or injuries.  What we fail to remember is that the body is one incredible vehicle.  We often underestimate the resolve within.  

I’m not saying that you should soldier on through all injuries.  Sometimes you just have to rest.  However, the difference between a grounding injury and a niggle you can work through is massive.  Sometimes all you need is a tea spoon of concrete so you can simply just get the hell on with it.

Australia is now the worlds fattest nation.  Is it time more of us stopped making piss poor excuses and just got out and exercised?  

My biggest gripe is people who say they don’t have the time.  Absolute rubbish.  We chose to make the time to watch TV as can be seen by record ratings figures.  We chose not to get up at 4 am and head out for a run before work.  We chose to go home and plonk ourselves in front of the idiot box at night instead of going to the gym or playing indoor sports.  We constantly look for excuses not to exercise and be healthy.  

I would love nothing more than to see greater numbers of our population get off their couch, pull themselves away from their smart phones and hit the roads for a run or a walk.  Sadly, I don’t see it happening anytime soon thanks to our American culture, intrinsically engraved into the nations mindset.

Even when you do pick up niggles it isn’t the end of the world.  Those of us who are able bodied should embrace what we were given.  Being fit and healthy can and will make your world a better place.  Just get out there and do it!
