It was a long time coming. We all knew what was in-store yet many of us decided to put our heads in the sand. The few who did speak up against the pay rises for Queensland politicians were lambasted by the majority and fed many a line about why we can’t stop it from happening.
In just over 12 months since he sacked 15,000 government workers, leaving many without food to put on the table, the Queensland Premier, Campbell Newman happily took on $67,525 pay rise as the state of Queensland continues to suffer. Newman will now earn a whopping $350,628 a year for his key role as the states Premier. Even opposition leader, Anna Palaszcuk was given a pay rise which takes her annual income to $310,066 a year.
At the other end of the scale, Unions who have been fighting for a $27 a week pay rise for minimum workers have been told by business factions that $8.50 a week is a more appropriate sum. What’s all that they say about the rich getting richer?
Upon his election victory, Newman informed his state electorate that times would be tough and Queenslander’s would need to pull together and experience a few years of financial difficulty as the state pulled herself up off the canvas. Instantly funding was cut in many areas, money to be spent on infrastructure was culled and 15,000 job cuts were announced.
Tough times indeed Campbell.
For this cretin and his political cronies to accept absurd pay rises at a time when they have told the rest of the state we would need to “do it tough” is more than a little rich. I just hope that the voting public make a stand and oust one of the most inept and greed driven leaders that Queensland has had since the days of Joh Bjelke-Petersen.
If news of these pay rises whilst the rest of the state suffers does not make your skin crawl then you may very well have serious issues with your ability to function as a decent, respectable and caring human being.
