Slut, whore or simply artistic?

I was watching some music video’s this morning and I suffered the cruel indignity of Christina Aguilera’s “Dirty” clip, complete with simulated masterbation and lyrics which include the line…..“I feel a bit dirty, it’s about time for my arousal”  To think that parents the world over allow their young children to watch clips so readily has left me wondering where society has gone wrong.

Why are young woman degraded and sexualised on such a regular basis?  Should we be taking more responsibility for what our children watch and buy?  Take the trend of short shorts that plentiful amounts of girls embrace wearing today.  The trend began some years ago now through the video clips of pop artists and we are seeing the results on our streets with girls as young as 14 happily showing their ass cheeks in public.  Is it a good thing that teenage girls are happy to put their assets on show at such an early age?  And who do we blame for this mess?  The parents?  The artists? The record label executives?  The girls themselves?

Is it degrading to see teenage girls dressing this way or just a normal part of the growing up process?

If you head to youtube.com there are no restrictions as to who can and cannot watch the aforementioned video for Christina Aguilera’s “Dirty” video clip.  However, if you chose to watch the beautiful and creative “Pagan Poetry” clip from Bjork you are asked to sign in and verify your age.  Should it not be the other way around?

In 2013 one of the more prominent clips that has been readily available on television and through social media can also take the mantel to being the most degrading clip of the year.  Watching the video for “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke leaves me feeling repulsed.  There is nothing good about this song, the video or the men singing in it.  And what of the poor woman who act out these borderline stripper dance moves?

In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Thicke has stated that he made the video because it shows “Everything that is derogatory towards woman because I respect them so much!”  He continued, “People say hey, do you think this is degrading towards woman?  And I say, yeah, of course it is.  What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman!”

Thankfully the scum that is Robin Thicke will be long forgotten in a year or two from now.  Yet another disappointing aspect of this video is that is was produced by a woman. Very sad to think that a woman would have a hand in such a disgusting attempt at shocking the viewers.

Standing in a nightclub a few months ago now I had the displeasure of seeing woman of all ages dance like cheap strippers as “Blurred Lines” bellowed out from the speakers surrounding the dancefloor.  Such a disappointing sight to see so many woman feel that they have to lower their standards to attract the attention of others.  Would you like to see your 15 year old daughter dancing like this or acting in these video clips?

In America now youtube hits are actually counted towards chart sales which increaes the record labels need to generate more and more degrading video clips to push sales and chart placings.  Such a sad state of affairs.

Perhaps the fact I am now 36 years of age has a lot to do with my views on degrading clips? Or maybe the only way to sell in the modern world is by degrading woman with less clothes on?  Either way it has been a shame to see woman exploited like never before in the music industry.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment of all this is that we are happily allowing it to take place.
